Adam Grant is a professor at Wharton and author of several best-selling books. He also publishes articles and a newsletter that are worthy of your time. I recently read his latest book, Hidden Potential / The Science of Achieving Greater Things.
Grant rolls out evidence that hidden potential is measured more by the distance covered (the journey) to the achievement that has occurred, rather than merely the presence of an achievement (high score, promotion, etc.). Hmm. In our hiring efforts, have we been more focused on credentials than the underlying character?
When I got to Chapter 8 addressing team performance, I was struck by this message: “Most teams don’t work because the creators of teams don’t understand the most valuable attributes of team members.” This caused me to reflect on the significant amount of work that we do with teams (about half of our business).
In six upcoming posts, I’ll be working through Chapter 8 with you – by extracting quotes from the book and offering perspective that flows from our observations of CRE brokerage teams. I hope you’ll read along with me.
