Here’s a quote from Chapter 8 in Adam Grant’s new book, Hidden Potential / The Science of Achieving Greater Things. In this chapter, Grant is addressing the reason why most teams don’t reach their potential. He’s referencing his college professor here:
“The professor’s name was Richard Hackman, and he was the world’s leading expert on teams. He’d spent nearly half a century studying teams in every field imaginable – from airline cockpit crews to hospital units to symphony orchestras. He’d found that in most cases, teamwork failed to make the dream work. It was more likely to be a nightmare…as anyone who ever did a group project in school can attest. Most teams were less than the sum of their parts.”
Our experience in coaching CRE brokerage teams agrees with Hackman’s conclusion. Typically, we have to help the team face these challenges:
- Most teams are assembled haphazardly, with very little attention to skill sets.
- The team captain often calls us after years of subpar performance.
- Change doesn’t take place until a major, usually negative, event occurs.
It doesn’t have to be this way. We can help you retool your team’s structure and focus. Why not call us before you run aground?
