Unlocking Team Potential: #3

strong leadership

Adam Grant examines team performance in Chapter 8 of his new book, Hidden Potential / The Science of Achieving Greater Things.  In this segment, Grant is addressing the impact of one bad apple:

“You can see the bad-apple problem in a study of NBA basketball teams – a setting where players who lack prosocial skills stand out as self-centered and narcissistic… If teams had many narcissists or even one extreme narcissist, they completed fewer assists and won fewer games.”

We’ve all got egos.  Many of us have had success in terms of both performance and compensation.  The problem occurs when the ego overwhelms the team.  We often answer questions like this:

  • How do you balance the extroverts and introverts on a CRE team?
  • One team member makes a lot more money than everyone else. What now?
  • The leader insists that everyone report to him/her. How do we grow?

It’s true – one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch.  We can help you evaluate your team’s balance, and work on the growth of all team members. Why not call us before your team starts losing games?
