Unlocking Team Potential: #4

symphonic orchestra

In his new book, Hidden Potential / The Science of Achieving Greater Things, Adam Grant addresses why teams so rarely reach their potential.  Here, he talks about the critical nature of a collaborative spirit on the team:

“In a meta-analysis of 22 studies, Anita (Woolley) and her colleagues discovered that collective intelligence depends less on people’s cognitive skills than their prosocial skills.  The best teams have the most team players – people who excel at collaborating with others.

Collective intelligence rises as team members recognize one another’s strengths, develop strategies for leveraging them and motivate one another to align their efforts in pursuit of a shared purpose.”

When we start to work with teams, we often ask for an org chart.  Usually, we get a “directory” – a list of the names, email addresses and cell phones of the team members.  When we ask for a visual outline of the roles on the team, we often get a blank look.

We think this is the reason why our video course entitled Form Follows Function is our most highly rated course.  Most CRE teams have almost no experience in thinking through the processes, and the allied roles, that teams must master to reach their potential.  The course can move your team from cacophony (gang-tackling every issue) to symphony (every player adding their contribution at just the right moment).
